Publisher's summary
An anthology of writings for the Christmas season from the pen of Charles Dickens.
Ebenezer Scrooge, described as "a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner," is certainly no lover of the Christmas season.
He is visited on Christmas Eve by the ghost of his former partner, Jacob Marley, who warns him that he will be visited by three further spirits: The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come. A heart-warming story of one man's redemption, populated with many memorable and well-loved characters.
'A Christmas Carol: Being a Ghost Story of Christmas' was published in 1843 and is one of Charles Dickens' best-loved tales. Following its success, Dickens went on to publish further novellas with strong social and moral messages for the Christmas market. These became known as his "Christmas books," all of which offer a wonderful glimpse of mid-19th Century Christmas traditions.
Included in this collection are the other four Christmas novellas:
'The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In' (1844); 'The Cricket on the Hearth: A Fairy Tale of Home' (1845); 'The Battle of Life: A Love Story' (1846); 'The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain: A Fancy for Christmas-Time' (1848)
Also included in this collection are the following, which first appeared in the seasonal editions of 'Household Words,' a publication that Charles Dickens edited in the early 1850s:
'A Christmas Tree'; 'What Christmas is as we Grow Older'; 'The Poor Relation's Story'; 'The Child's Story'; 'The Schoolboy's Story'; 'Nobody's Story'
